About Me
My interest in digital media was established in my childhood years when I discovered that making my own movies on a VHS camcorder allowed me to tell stories in exactly the way that I wanted to tell them. However, I didn’t realize that all the summer afternoons spent recording hours of grainy VHS video were the seed of my growing appreciation for visual storytelling and how powerful visual stories can be. I have since continued to pursue visual storytelling throughout my academic career and personal life, which has allowed me to develop my creative skills and has exposed me to a variety of valuable tools.
Skills
My accomplishments in digital media include knowledge of and familiarity with non-linear editing software such as Adobe Premiere Pro, Avid Media Composer, and DaVinci Resolve. I also have experience working with additional software such as Final Draft, Adobe After Effects, Photoshop, Lightroom, Illustrator, and Avid Pro Tools. I have experience working with a variety of digital production tools such as DSLR cameras, mirrorless cameras, RED cameras, lighting equipment, microphones and grip equipment.
Accomplishments
A project that I consider to be a great personal accomplishment was a recent opportunity to connect with the owners of ‘The Cat’s Cradle’ in Provo and create a documentary for their business. Filming this documentary was particularly rewarding because of these business owner’s willingness to share their message on camera and collaborate with enthusiasm. Another project that I consider to be one of my recent accomplishments is the work I have created as a wedding photographer and videographer. I regard this work as a significant milestone in my visual storytelling journey in the sense that this job allowed me to earn money using my skills as a filmmaker and gain professional experience.
UVU has given me many additional opportunities to accomplish my goals as a filmmaker and develop my visual storytelling skills. One such opportunity was a film that I shot in the Orem Public Library for my Cinematography class at UVU. Although executing my creative vision for this project was very challenging, it was also a great moment of personal growth, considering how much I learned about blocking, directing, lighting, camera operation, location scouting, and time management. This project was also rewarding due to the overwhelmingly positive response from employees of the Orem Public Library who have used my video for promotional purposes.
Academic & Professional Goals
As I have been exposed to different aspects of film through my education at UVU and my own exploration of filmmaking, I have become increasingly passionate about editing and post-production. I love editing and post-production because this process of storytelling is much like a puzzle where the pieces of a story must be put together in a way that creates a cohesive narrative. Furthermore, I have found that editing is an immensely powerful way to tell a story because the post-production process allows an editor to impact and redirect a story endlessly with his or her creativity. For these reasons, I intend to pursue the editing track at UVU and learn everything I can about post-production in UVU’s Digital Cinema program.
Not only do I intend to pursue post-production academically, I also plan on pursuing this path professionally. I am looking forward to using my creative skills and knowledge of digital storytelling to build a career in post-production and utilize these skills to thrive in a professional environment.
